Surviving the Summer Heat

Strategies to Maintain Proper Hydration. Sponsored by Abbott

SAN DIEGO — The heat is on across the country. And here in San Diego, we are in the midst of “July Fry.” That is why it’s essential to recognize the signs of dehydration.

Pam Nisevich Bede, a registered dietitian, leading sports nutrition expert and author of  Fuel The Fire, a nutrition and body confidence guidebook for female athletes, joins our Laura Cavanaugh with hydration strategies for beating the heat.

Staying on top of hydration is important for health and performance. Thirst is not always the best indicator. Some signs of dehydration include feelings of lethargy, irritability, dizziness and headaches.

That’s why being proactive about hydration throughout the day is critical.

“You can get up to 20% of your fluid needs from foods alone,” said Nisevich Bede. “A lot of the fruits, vegetables, cucumber, melon, a lot of these items are up to 90% just water. Plus you’re getting in the vitamins, minerals, fiber that most of us don’t get enough of as well as electrolytes.”

Adding in a science-based electrolyte drink, like Pedialyte, is a great strategy.  It is designed for fast and effective hydration with three key electrolytes for hydration – sodium, chloride and potassium.

Pedialyte quickly replenishes fluids to feel better fast.  Pedialyte comes in sport liters, powder packs and freezer pops to help replenish more of what you may lose due to excessive heat and exercise.
